Thanks for all the feedback so far.  Based on suggestions, the layout 
has been modified a bit.  Here's the latest:

* The file list is now a multi-select list.  You toggle selected files 
by clicking on them or hitting the space bar.
* The file list and commit message boxes have been switched left<->right
* The tab order is set to the file list at startup, then the commit 
message window.  From there you will be able to [Ctrl]-[Enter] to 
trigger the commit or [Esc] to abort (hands never leave the keyboard).
* The file list is now in a monospace font.
* The filtering check-boxes are gone, except for the ignored button.  

Final layout question before I start digging into the vcs interface 
code:

The commit message window seems a bit constricted, should I increase the 
width of the dialog window, or should I move the commit message window 
below the file list?
