Yep, I was involved in that discussion.  We wanted a distributed SCM that 
would better enable downstream vendors of RPM to track upstream and push 
their local changes back up to the upstream.  The major choices were 
mercurial or git, and none of the people involved really wanted to use git 
(for many obvious reasons), so we chose mercurial (:  The new branch code is 
very compelling too, as RPM upstream does handle a lot of branches, where it 
isn't always quick/easy to toss up a cloned repo.
