Date format

I have spent some time figuring out how to specify a date for  
mercurial, but I haven't made much progress. After anything I could  
come up with failed, I looked at the source (changelog.py) and noted  
that a date specification consists of two integers separated by white  
space, and that the two integers are subject to numerical constraints  
whose meaning is not clear to me.

Could someone please give me a working example?
