[issue239] Huge files need too much resident (non-swappable) memory

New submission from Thomas Arendsen Hein <thomas at intevation.de>:
initial checkin of a 330MB file needs 338MB virtual memory (that's ok), but
200MB resident memory.
Further checking in of a change to this file will probably need twice the memory
(untested).
This can be improved through streaming the file.
