I'm afraid the solution will be more tricky than that.  It's worth
fixing, but it will take a while for people to find the cycles to do it
without complicating the code too much or affecting performance, I
think.

There is good reason to expect that streaming I/O should improve
performance, in fact, but that still doesn't make it easy to do.
