It's not that hard, I'm new to mercurial myself (though I used a bit of monotone before).

Since you mention tortoisehg one thing in advance: if you're not into the command line, mercurial might not be for you. The GUIs are IMHO not ready for prime time.

Espicially chapter 6 might be interesting for you.
