Questions about branching in Mercurial

The branch created in a clone updates the main branch when pushed, the 
internal named branch doesn't when merge is used. Thus both methods have 
different functionality. How can you then say, the goal is to provide the 
same functionality?

Mercurial is missing the 'fast forward merge' functionality that Git has.
