I chose the symbol because it's a more interesting-looking variant of
the common planetary symbol for Mercury. I hadn't anticipated there
would be religious objections to it. (It's a good thing I scrapped my
other design that showed a cartoon of Mohammed holding up two scrolls
with diffs on them... :)

[FWIW, John Dee and his works had nothing to do with the Devil or
paganism. Dee was a devout Christian who devoted much of his life to
the task of communicating with angels. Alchemy, as practiced in
Europe, was based on Christian philosophy and involved elaborate
metaphors between chemical transformation and the soul's progress to
salvation.]

I like the idea of a drop, but the specific design looks too much like
a grayscale version of the Symantec logo <www.symantec.com>. The
typeface in version 1 is nice, but could use a heavier weight; version
2's oblique sans-serif is too generic, though. I've got a fairly big
font library, so I could offer a number of alternatives.

An image of two drops merging into one would make a nice visual
metaphor...

What's the new deadline?
