I asked the same question on this list not TOO long ago, and evidently I 
wasn't the first one to ask it. I guess it comes up periodically. While 
a lot of people seem to agree that the portable option seems like it 
should be an exception (and not the rule) for MQ, no one has gone ahead 
and made the change.

Perhaps its a code ownership problem. I don't know how often MQ gets 
touched by its primary maintainers.
