I'm using XP SP2 and just noticed that I get the same error, if I type the name
into the "Address Bar". I previously opened Explorer from cmd window using
'start \\?\c:\users\username\desktop'. (start syntax is brain-dead, if you have
to quote the path you have to use something like 'start "" "\\?\c:\documents and
settings\username\desktop' (yes, you can leave the last double quote off!).)

So it seems that many UI components (open dialog, the address bar, ...) get
confused by the \\?\ syntax although the underlying system supports it.
