Just a minor point in HTML's favor, which may be utterly inconsequential 
to you but is the deciding factor for me: HTML converts to other formats 
much, much better than PDF.  For example, I have one of those Sony 
eReaders.  I can (and have) slurped the hg book and converted it to LRF 
format (the native eReader format).

Anyway, I don't really want to get into the HTML vs. PDF holy war that 
seems to have occurred; I just wanted to voice a +1 for HTML format, for 
people who want the freedom to convert the document into some other format.
