I don't know why you're getting the Microsoft Visual Studio error, but I
would try installing TortoiseHg.

The fncache repository format came in 1.1. You can check here:

This change wont do anything to your existing clones -- repositories are
not "upgraded" automatically and old versions of Mercurial will continue
to understand them.

If you make a new repository, old versions of Mercurial wont be able to
read it directly from a local disk. They will still be able to read it
if served over HTTP.
