What to do befor "hg update"

> $ hg diff -r 42 -r tip
> ... patch hg update would apply.
ok, this is helpfull, but to me it look's a bit like a workaround. For every 
command which is (possible) changing my working copy, my lokal repo or a 
remote repo there's a "dry run command", expect for update, why? Is there a 
special meaning for which i'm not smart enough to see it, a leak of time to 
implement, or has nobody ever asked for it?
