Excellent question.
I have not used git very much, so I can't answer authoritatively, but
this version would use Mercurial's changelog/tagging, manifest,
dirstate, and for the most part the wire protocol.
I don't know if git allows you to do shallow checkouts, but that is
essentially what the cache hierarchy provides. The hierarchy is the
primary differentiation.
