First, as OP on the thread, I'm really glad I posted this.  Lots of
really top notch info has been posted.  A few posters attempted to
blow it off with rtfm type comments.  But those of you who attempted
to add something useful have really added to my knowledge in a way
that might take yrs to come by any other way.

animal, a `scm' (I guess), and vcs type tools.  It appears to have
some kind of different focus but I'm not getting what it is.

Wikipedia (in the first few lines) indicates the names [scm|vcs] are
  interchangeable ..  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revision_control

is that right? or do they have different intended usage?
