A particular machine is unable to run clone command against a remote repository

Thanks to everyone who helped. The problem had nothing to do with
Mercurial.

The hostname of the client machine was identical to the domain name of the
repository. So Linux was getting confused, and not relaying requests from
the Mercurial client.
