If you are happy with https then it means that you had a password but no 
keyfile to use for ssh, and that doesn't match that the ssh server was 
insisting on keyfile authentication.

You never told which instructions you were following, but apparently 
either they were wrong in guiding you to use ssh, or savannahs ssh setup 
is wrong.

I hope you already have informed them or will do that.
