I also didn't see any big degradation in performance when using
Mercurial on the command line. What slows down is tools (like Bitbucket
itself) that put all the branch names into a single drop-down menu. In
fact, Chrome dies on my system if I hover over the "branches" drop-down
menu on the Bitbucket page.
