Subrepo: clone only, no working copy?

Hmm...

I don't understand exactly what you want to achieve and why you want it, 
but from your description it seems like you say that you have seen that 
it _is_ possible. Can you clarify what your problem and the question is?

However, the revision of a subrepo is by definition exactly what it has 
been updated to and what is in the working directory. You might be 
asking for something that isn't possible.
