This sound like a merge-config // user manipulation error issue.
Can you provide us with more details ?

"they just crash for no reason" is fairly vague. Can you be more 
specific here ?

Same here, what was your actual issue ?

Mercurial is used in production by various large company (eg: Facebook, 
Mozilla, Unity) without the trouble you seems to encounter.
